MOTHER OF THE YEAR
Nominees for this award are sought yearly on the state level with recommendations coming from the mother's outside contacts such as church groups, choral groups, PTA organizations, local businesses etc. Nominees are well respected, devoted mothers who interact in a positive manner on a family, spiritual, community, and civic basis.

YOUNG MOTHER
Each state also has an opportunity to choose their nominee for the State Young Mother. This award honors dedicated, outstanding mothers who are striving to improve their parenting skills and whose children are 18 and younger. These mothers can be nominated at the state level by friends, family, and acquaintances.

2006 HAWAII MOTHER OF THE YEAR - Sally Lee

SALLY OKURA LEE was born and raised in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. She has been married to Abe Lee for 33 years and together they have raised 6 children and have 2 grandchildren.  Over the years, they have taken in about 48 children, teenagers and adults who were in difficult situations and needed guidance and a place of peace and safety.  Sally has been an active member of her church all her life and has served diligently in whatever capacity she could.  She graduated cum laude with both a Bachelors and Masters Degrees and has worked as a social worker for 27 years.  She has shared wise counsel with thousands of individuals.  She has worked with birthparents and adoptive couples and is "Auntie Sally" to hundreds of children whom she has placed for adoption in loving, secure homes. God and family come first in her life.

RECOGNIZED IN 2007
Sally Okura Lee, our 2006 Mother of the Year was selected by the National Association of Social Workers – Hawaii Chapter as the Social Worker of the Year for Family and Child Welfare. She was honored at a NASW banquet in March 2007. Sally has been a social worker with LDS Family Services for 26 years. She also received the Angel of Adoption Congressional Award in Washington DC in September 2006 for the extensive work she has done with adoption in Hawaii over the years. She was also named recipient of the national award of Service to Families and Children from LDS Family Services in 2006.

2006 YOUNG MOTHER OF THE YEAR - Taran McQuivey

TARAN MCQUIVEY lives in Laie, Hawaii with her husband Jace McQuivey and their four children. Taran was born in Carmichael, California. She moved to Hawaii at a young age and lived in the same small town most of her life. She is a veteran entertainer in the islands and for the past 26 years has been a featured soloist in the legendary Don Ho Show. Taran recorded a CD entitled "All That I Am." It features her singing contemporary pop inspirational music, and earned her a finalist nomination for the "Na Hoku Hanohano" award (Hawaii equivalent of the Grammy's) as female vocalist of the year. Taran holds a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from BYU-Hawaii. She is very active in church and community organizations working with the youth. Her family is her greatest joy and she loves watching them learn and grow.
